## Import

```jsx
import {
  UNSTABLE_Skeleton,
  SkeletonPrimitive,
  getSkeletonClassName,
  useSkeleton,
  useSkeletonClassName,
} from "@cfa/react-core";
```

Skeleton is currently exported as an unstable component while the API is refined through beta feedback.

## Live Editor

```jsx
function SkeletonExample() {
  const [isLoading, setIsLoading] = React.useState(true);
  return (
    <div style={{ display: "grid", gap: 16, maxWidth: 420 }}>
      <Button onPress={() => setIsLoading((loading) => !loading)}>
        {isLoading ? "Show content" : "Show skeleton"}
      </Button>
      <UNSTABLE_Skeleton isLoading={isLoading}>
        <Card.Root>
          <Card.Content>
            <Card.Title>Primary Title</Card.Title>
            <Card.Subtitle>Sub title</Card.Subtitle>
            <Card.Body>
              Detailed text. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod
              tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
            </Card.Body>
          </Card.Content>
          <Card.Actions>
            <Button variant="outlined">Cancel</Button>
            <Button>Ok</Button>
          </Card.Actions>
        </Card.Root>
      </UNSTABLE_Skeleton>
    </div>
  );
}
```

## Patterns

Skeleton supports two loading patterns: wrapped content with `useSkeleton`, and manual `SkeletonPrimitive` blocks.

### Content masking

Wrap real layout and mock content in `UNSTABLE_Skeleton`. When `isLoading` is `true`, the wrapper sets `aria-busy`, applies `inert`, and provides loading context to descendants through `useSkeleton()`. Full `inert` behavior (blocking focus and interaction inside the shell) requires React 19; on React 17/18, `aria-busy` and skeleton masking still apply.

Supported components apply their own skeleton styles when they read that context. Use CFA components in the layout rather than raw HTML when you want masking.

```jsx
function MaskedContentExample() {
  return (
    <UNSTABLE_Skeleton isLoading>
      <article style={{ display: "grid", gap: 16, maxWidth: 560 }}>
        <Heading level={2} variant="headline2">
          Primary Title
        </Heading>
        <Text>
          Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt
          ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
        </Text>
        <Text>
          Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat
          nulla pariatur.
        </Text>
      </article>
    </UNSTABLE_Skeleton>
  );
}
```

#### Supported components

These components call `useSkeleton()` and apply skeleton styles when wrapped in a loading `UNSTABLE_Skeleton`:

- `Avatar`
- `Button` and `LinkButton`
- `Card.Subtitle`, `Card.Body`, and `Card.Media` (`Card.Title` via `Heading`)
- `Heading`
- `Link`
- `ProgressBar`
- `Table.Cell` and `Table.Column`
- `Text`

### Primitive placeholders

Use `SkeletonPrimitive` when you need full control over the loading layout, or when the real component is not wired to `useSkeleton`. Set `width`, `height`, and `borderRadius` to match the content you are loading.

```jsx
function PrimitivePlaceholdersExample() {
  return (
    <div style={{ display: "grid", gap: 16, maxWidth: 400 }}>
      <SkeletonPrimitive width="32%" height="16px" borderRadius="4px" />
      <SkeletonPrimitive width="100%" height="44px" />
      <SkeletonPrimitive width="40%" height="16px" borderRadius="4px" />
      <SkeletonPrimitive width="100%" height="44px" />
    </div>
  );
}
```

### Custom components

Use `useSkeletonClassName()` in your own components to apply the shared mask classes from the nearest loading `Skeleton`:

```jsx
import { cx } from "class-variance-authority";
import { useSkeletonClassName } from "@cfa/react-core";
function MyWidget({ className, children, ...props }) {
  const skeletonClassName = useSkeletonClassName();
  return (
    <div {...props} className={cx(className, skeletonClassName)}>
      {children}
    </div>
  );
}
```

For text-shaped placeholders, pass `{ variant: "text" }`. When nested icons or images should be hidden while loading, add `{ hideContent: true }`.

```jsx
const skeletonClassName = useSkeletonClassName({ variant: "text", hideContent: true });
```

## Examples

### Profile

```jsx
function ProfileSkeletonExample() {
  return (
    <UNSTABLE_Skeleton isLoading>
      <div
        style={{
          display: "flex",
          alignItems: "center",
          gap: 16,
          maxWidth: 360,
        }}
      >
        <Avatar.Root size="lg">
          <Avatar.Fallback>CF</Avatar.Fallback>
        </Avatar.Root>
        <div style={{ display: "grid", gap: 8 }}>
          <Heading level={3} variant="headline3">
            Cathy Franklin
          </Heading>
          <Heading level={4} variant="overline2">
            Restaurant Operator
          </Heading>
        </div>
      </div>
    </UNSTABLE_Skeleton>
  );
}
```

### Table

```jsx
function TableSkeletonExample() {
  const items = [
    { id: 1, name: "Chick-fil-A Sauce", flavor: "Sweet & Smoky", quantity: 100 },
    { id: 2, name: "Polynesian Sauce", flavor: "Sweet & Tangy", quantity: 10 },
    { id: 3, name: "Garden Herb Ranch Sauce", flavor: "Creamy & Herby", quantity: 25 },
  ];
  return (
    <UNSTABLE_Skeleton isLoading>
      <Table.Root aria-label="Chick-fil-A Sauces">
        <Table.Header>
          <Table.Column isRowHeader>Sauce Name</Table.Column>
          <Table.Column>Flavor Profile</Table.Column>
          <Table.Column>Quantity</Table.Column>
        </Table.Header>
        <Table.Body>
          {items.map((item) => (
            <Table.Row key={item.id} id={item.id}>
              <Table.Cell>{item.name}</Table.Cell>
              <Table.Cell>{item.flavor}</Table.Cell>
              <Table.Cell alignment="end">{item.quantity}</Table.Cell>
            </Table.Row>
          ))}
        </Table.Body>
      </Table.Root>
    </UNSTABLE_Skeleton>
  );
}
```

### Progress bar

```jsx
function ProgressBarSkeletonExample() {
  return (
    <UNSTABLE_Skeleton isLoading>
      <div style={{ maxWidth: 360 }}>
        <ProgressBar label="Order completion" value={68} />
      </div>
    </UNSTABLE_Skeleton>
  );
}
```

## Usage guidance

- Wrap real CFA components with placeholder content to preserve layout and spacing.
- Full `inert` behavior on the loading shell requires React 19. On React 17/18, `aria-busy` and skeleton masking still apply.
- Raw HTML such as `<p>` or `<img>` is not masked automatically. Use a wired component (`Text`, `Card.Media`, and so on) or compose `SkeletonPrimitive` blocks instead.
- Form controls (`Select`, `TextInput`, `Checkbox`, and similar) are not masked. Use `SkeletonPrimitive` for field-shaped placeholders, or leave fields out of the loading layout.
- Compose multiple `SkeletonPrimitive` elements when you need custom rows or form-field layouts.
- `Chip` is exported from `@cfa/react-core/server` and does not read `useSkeleton()`. Use `SkeletonPrimitive` for chip-shaped placeholders instead.

## Props

### Skeleton

| Name | Type | Default | Description |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| children | `ReactNode` | - | - |
| isLoading | `boolean` | `false` | When \`true\`, provides loading context to descendants through \`useSkeleton()\`. Toggle this off once the real content is ready to reveal it in place.&#xA;&#xA;While loading, the wrapper sets \`aria-busy\` and \`inert\` so content in the shell is not interactive or focusable. Full \`inert\` behavior requires React 19; on React 17/18 the boolean prop is still passed, but browsers may not apply inert correctly. Supported child components apply their own skeleton styles; raw HTML and unsupported components are not masked automatically. |
